Radio Heatherwood 25 Years Not Out

On 10th June 1976, the radio service known as Radio Heatherwood was officially opened by Michael Parkinson.

The service had actually been on air prior to the date of 10th June. It was the then works foreman( Bill Berry ) who was providing this early service. This early service relied on the record collection of Bill, of which most were 78's. This service lasted off and on for about six years.

An injection of cash by the League of Friends ensured the service got off the ground properly on the 10th June 1976.

25 Years Later

On 9th June 2001 the official opening of the new studio complex coincides with the 25th Birthday.

25 and Still Going Strong . . .

Rod Stewart may have spent 48 weeks on the charts in 1976 but the year was also marked by the first broadcast from Radio Heatherwood. To celebrate the achievement of 25 years broadcasting and the official opening of our new studio, a full days broadcast was held on 9 June 2001. This involved all presenters looking back over their time at Radio Heatherwood with each show being given a selection of years since 1976 for their music. As expected, patients and staff were heavily involved with dedications and requests throughout the day.

Margaret Edwards, the Chief Executive of Heatherwood and Wexham Park Trusts, performed the official opening accompanied by representatives from the Friends of Heatherwood Hospital who have been so instrumental in supporting Radio Heatherwood over the last 25 years.

The only disappointment during the day was that our engineer, PJ, who had spent so many hours building the new studio, couldn’t join the party owing to illness – we missed you!
