The league of friends radio service radio Heatherwood gave away the first specially designed mug in 1993. Over the next 17 years the radio service has been drawing out winners each broadcast evening.
When the mug giveaways were first launched, the radio devised clever ways in which to award them. Mondays chose a lucky bed number, Tuesdays was a lucky number, Wednesdays lucky request, Thursday it was a lucky song and Saturdays was sexiest Pyjamas.
As the league of friends celebrated it's 50th year of friendship the tradition of selecting a mug winner each broadcast evening continues with a special edition.
A request made by a patient each evening automatically guarantees an entry into the draw.
On Monday 7th January 2008 the first of the golden jubilee mugs was awarded. The radio station took great pride in presenting one of the specially commissioned commemorative mugs to a grateful patient Bruce Dunsford.
Over the years the radio service has given away thousands of mugs brightening up the lives of many different patients who were in need of some cheer.
